Not everybody likes OR can speak successfully to a crowded room. In fact, we've heard that public speaking is the No.1 fear for many people!
Whether it's something you're expected to do in your job or for a family/friend occassion, a couple of therapy sessions will enable and give you the confidence and calm approach needed to allow you to perform at your absolute best.
So, it's OK if you're nervous. You're human. The audience won't judge you for it, they'll understand and root for you, especially given over 90% of them will be thinking 'Thank goodness it's him up there and not me'! Remember too that (unless you're a stage actor by occupation) no one will expect a flawless or dazzling performance.
All that said, there are things you can do to help calm your nerves.
- Research a speech format from the internet, this will help you to keep the speech structured as well as feel more in control and organised.
- Practice, practice, practice! Run through it in full at least 3 times, preferably with somebody else.
- If possible given your other duties, get a good night's sleep the night before and avoid alcohol.
- In the hours beforehand, do some simple physical exercises and breathing techniques (check out the FREE downloads section) and limit your caffeine intake..
- With the help of a single BWRT session, you can learn how to 'Visualise the presentation going well', don't underestimate the power of your mind and positive thought!
- Don't think of it as 'a performance', think of it as an opportunity to tell your audience or guests about your subject and include things they'll enjoy hearing about.
- Have you speech notes/script to hand - you may not need it, but it can be your safety net.
- Move your eye contact around the room, keep to around 5 seconds glances on any one person in the audience - support from the crowd helps to keep them all involved.
- Before you begin your opening line, take a deep breath and use your learnt session techniques before you begin - this will relax your body and keep your voice steady.
